Farewell 2021đ đ„
Well, thatâs it. Another year (almost) over. Despite the never-ending cycle of covid doom I hope you are well and can take a moment to appreciate where you now and how far youâve come over the last year.
Before I clock out for a few weeks and enjoy my family and friends I wanted to share my top tips from some of my past newsletters.
If you need any help with plans and/or strategies for your email systems for the new year please do not hesitate to get in touch. Send me an email or DM and we can hash out your 2022 goals!
P.S. Keep an eye for some exciting new content coming your way next year. Iâm currently in the planning phase for some new resources so if you have specific questions or queries regarding anything related to email marketing do let me know so I can incorporate them into my content!
I wish you the most magical of Decembers đ
Top tips from 2021
1. Stop selling early
85% of people who buy, don't make a purchase until AFTER 90 days.
You don't have to 'act fast' and give leads an opportunity to buy straight away for fear of losing this chance forever.
"Instead of rushing to make a sale that's unlikely to happen (and almost certainly undermining future sales along the way), we can focus on relationships before transactions."
2. Relationships before revenue
When we focus our energy on connection and relationship building, we show our audience that we understand trust and fandom arenât built overnight - we show them that we donât value them simply for their money.
Leading with a sentiment of âvalue and connection above elseâ will help your audience sticks around long enough to make their purchase decision in their own time. Itâs all about giving them agency.
3. Building trust
Trust doesnât come from just one email, or one apology, it grows over time through an interconnected web of interactions between you and your audience.
Every time we interact with our audience is an opportunity to build â or erode â trust. Take those opportunities very seriously. - Shawn Twing
Trust is built with the help of empathy, integrity, credibility and consistency.
4. Donât trick your audience
Acknowledge your motives, show you understand your audience and be up front.
If in doubt, always choose a moment of connection over a quick, thoughtless sale.
5. You are not the hero, they are
You are not here to âsaveâ or ârescueâ your potential customer from their current state, this places them in a fragile and weak setting, instead, you are here to help them become the hero of their own story.
Play the supporting role.
6. Be that breath of fresh air
Sometimes copywriting is about finding that unique way to reach your audience, to be memorable, to create a reaction, a smile, a frown or a tear, and spark some connection - not just with the company, but also the world around them.
In your emails, donât be afraid to take risks, be more human and more honest.
And donât skirt around issues - face them head on.
7. Lost in a sea of numbers
The power lies in having a list a people who actually want to give you their time and money, not how many there are.
Rather than prioritising list growth, prioritise list optimisation.
Stop selling to everyone.
8. Perfect your flywheel
In a flywheel, each step leads inevitably to the next - it canât help but keep the entire process in motion, and every time the flywheel turns a fraction less effort is required, while output is increased.
Keeping your business engine running at the start can be difficult, but with the right planning, momentum can start to quickly build until your business engine runs effortlessly with minimal input.
9. âTis the season for optimisation
Sometimes all your emails need are a few simple tweaks to help them convert.
(1) Be recognisable; (2) ask questions, segment and purge; (3) promote replies; (4) warm-up your audience.
10. My biggest piece of advice for 2022
đ Play the long game.
